'The Light That Shines' by Disunity
We've always been intrigued by the connection between mental health and art, so when we set out to create a song for our newly conceived post-punk band - Disunity, we drew loose inspiration from Stanley Kubrick's psychological horror masterpiece, The Shining. Kubrick's film, based on Stephen King's novel, delves into the descent into madness and the crumbling of reality—a theme that resonated with us.
The song, 'The Light that Shines', explores the harrowing journey of someone whose mental health is declining, depicted through the metaphor of a fading light. This metaphor captures the essence of how the world starts to lose its vibrancy and clarity for the person, mirroring the eerie and unsettling atmosphere of The Shining. The protagonist in our song, much like Jack Torrance in the movie, finds themselves trapped in a relentless spiral of deteriorating mental stability, unable to perceive the world as they once did.
To enhance the haunting narrative of the song, we created a lyric video that visually conveys the message of mental disintegration. The video is designed to evoke a sense of unease and reflection, much like Kubrick’s film, drawing viewers into the dark, introspective journey of the protagonist.
'The Light that Shines' is a testament to the powerful connection between visual and auditory art forms, and how they can together explore the depths of human emotion and psychological states.
